Olympian Shaun White’s adorable blaze of glory on Rolling Stone

During the Olympics, I avoided covering Shaun White not because I don’t care for him, but because talking about Shaun makes me feel dirty. Good-dirty. Because he’s one of those guys that does it for me, and I have no idea why. It’s not like he’s some Jon Hamm-esque heartthrob. It’s not like I look at photos of Shaun and think “I need to get with that.” Even looking at him shirtless on this new issue of Rolling Stone doesn’t really do anything for me sexually. But when I watch him interviewed, or see him break into one of those huge grins after rocking the half-pipe, and I want him. He’s f-cking adorable.

Shaun White has revolutionized snowboarding, won the big gold in Vancouver and lit his snowboard aflame, Hendrix-style, on the cover of the new issue of Rolling Stone, joining an elite club of athletes to appear on our cover not once, but twice. And as the focused, business savvy White tells it, a lot of his recent success on the half-pipe and off can be attributed to a new addition to his life: “Getting into music has changed my personality and my way of doing things,” he reveals to RS writer Vanessa Grigoriadis. “I”m far more open now.”

White, who began snowboarding at six and went pro at 13, has recently returned to one of his early loves — skateboarding — but he does more shredding on one of his three Les Pauls. Jimi Hendrix, Guns n’ Roses and Led Zeppelin are in regular rotation; “Whole Lotta Love” is his favorite-ever song. “I think guitar is the best thing in the world,” he says. “It’s the only thing where no matter what I do, I can’t do it all myself.”

So What Do We Do About Erin Andrews? [Duan!]
Thursday, 03 September 2009 10:00    PDF Print E-mail

College football returns to us (and ESPN) tonight and that means America"s Sideline Princess is back on the job. But can we talk about her without talking about that thing that we"re not supposed to be talking about?

Ever since "the unpleasantness" of this summer, everyone has been wondering what will happen when Erin Andrews goes back to work. How will fans react? Her co-workers? The drooling bloggers? Is everything going to be different from now on, like when you graduated from that sappy high school TV drama?

My guess is that she probably won"t be posing for a lot of waist-cinching candids with any bozo who comes out of the stands. N.C. State says they"re always on alert for drunken idiots and ESPN is bringing their own security, so don"t expect any Rey Malaluga-type nonsense. There probably won"t be any eating of wacky

Maria Sharapova Returned to US Open With an Easy Victory and a Nice Outfit

NEW YORK (AP) — Maria Sharapova was right where she likes to be: on the Grand Slam stage and in the spotlight.

After missing last year"s U.S. Open with a shoulder injury, the 2006 champion returned to the tournament Tuesday night with an impressive 6-3, 6-0 victory over Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria.

Sharapova"s game was as glittery as her black-and-silver dress and matching headwrap, an outfit she described as a tribute to New York"s skyline.

Several hours after Dinara Safina came perilously close to becoming the first No. 1-seeded woman to lose in this major tournament"s first round, Sharapova gave a much stronger performance.

The three-time Grand Slam title winner produced 29 winners — a whopping 23 more than her 98th-ranked opponent. And Sharapova"s game was particularly clean in the second set, when she hit 16 winners and only five unforced errors.

Apart from four double-faults, Sharapova showed no signs of the shoulder tear that forced her to have surgery in October and kept off the tour for nearly 10

Stevie Johnson likes to race lobster boats. Well, he doesn"t like to race them as much as he likes turning them into insane boat-car hybrids that are totally freakin" awesome. That"s "Sunbird", his well ... Pontiac Sunbird convertible with twin outboard engines. ("It"s a cah-boat," in New England-ese.)

Maine lobster boat racing is a crazy competitive sport and while Johnson has the crazy part down, he"s not so big on the competitive. He usually loses every race to Gavin Alley, a lobsterman who sank his first boat because the racing engine he put in it was too big. Since then he"s figured out how to win most races with his crazy monster drag race engines. So, actually it"s not that competitive at all.

Weary of trying to keep up with competitors who were spending $60,000 and more on high-power racing engines, Mr. Holland retired from the circuit in 2000. "Bragging rights are all you get out of it, and pride was getting expensive," he says.

Yeah, that"s right. Track and field in a non-Olympic year. And not even the fun running sports. It"s a dude jumping over a bar. Or maybe hitting the bar. Who really knows? It doesn"t seem like he"s going to be able to get his feet over it, but then you don"t know Sweden"s Linus Thornblad, do you?

All I know is that sleeping on a pillow top mattress is usually enough to throw my back out of alignment, so I assume Linus is going to need heating pads and a ton of Icy Hot for the rest of this year.
